American Girl Crafts at Park Meadows Mall

Maybe you haven't heard of American Girls... yet. If you have a girl, it's nearly impossible to avoid the topic. Especially if you browse through Park Meadows Mall and stumble upon the American Girl store. The first in Colorado, the store offers a tantalizing array of American Girls and their exquisite accessories.

However, on Sunday afternoons I discovered they offer a special craft time for girls. On Sunday, July 18 stop by from 1-3pm for Lanie's Nature Notebook craft and on Sunday, July 25 from 2-4pm for Flower Power Frame craft.

American Girl is definitely doing something right with young girls. Their doll characters all support excellent moral values and teach the history of our country through the eyes of children. Each doll has her unique story that is captured through books and through her wardrobe, of course!

And moms, there's something unique for you at Park Meadows too - the Williams Sonoma Cookbook Club. The next session is July 28 and the topic is "Fiesta at Ricks." A reservation is required so check out the website for all the details.

Make a Difference: Black Stallion Literacy Program

Although it's hard to pin down our very favorite summer activity, one would have to be our afternoon with the Black Stallion Literacy Project. I was unfamiliar with the program until it was brought to the HoneyBear Tree Preschool at our church and my children attended with other children from the community. The Black Stallion Literacy Project (BSLP) is a program that is well represented around the front range in Colorado, but extends across the country from it's roots in Florida.

Born of a family heritage in 1999, BSLP has grown to serve hundreds of thousands of children across the nation. The purpose and goal of the organization is clear on their website:

"The Black Stallion Literacy Foundation is an innovative partnership of educators, businesses, volunteers, education foundations, and staff members focused on promoting literacy through the winning combination of live horses and books by Walter Farley. The program is based on the classic books of Walter Farley an…

Summer Plan 2012

Is anyone else asking themselves what happened to the last 3 months?? (Maybe you're wondering what happened to the last 3 years or just the last 3 days... at any rate you know how I feel, mom.)

Today was my kids' last day of school for the year. I'm sitting on the precipice of another summer. This was my first year of "freedom" - two kids in school full time. It felt good. But as predicted I packed every possible moment with housework, volunteering, writing, and working at my "real job" (ie. the one I actually get paid to do).

And it makes me wonder, how will I ever scale back and just enjoy the lazy days of summer?? How can I embark on a summer of fun and adventure without feeling like I'm staring into the abyss? I've done an unofficial survey of other moms I know and there's a mix of emotions. Some are ecstatic to have kids at home this summer; others are dreading it. I have a funny feeling the first group isn't telling the whole truth…
